A reply from a Dentist:

Generally, the World Health Organisation recommends check-ups every six months, because that is about the amount of time that problems may develop in gums, or new decay to form. The time interval varies, with some patients requiring two visits a year at six-month intervals, and others an annual check-up. This depends on the state of cleanliness, the number and type of fillings, the patient's body response to infection, and other factors.

In general, fixing a dental problem is much more expensive then maintaining dental health - just like a car. If you do not regularly service your car, the engine may end up with a catastrophic failure. Do not wait for this to happen, and visit the friendly dentist regularly.

It's been repeated again and again - that prevention is better than cure. And that's what dental check-ups are all about - prevention and early detection of dental problems.

Many people think that there is no need to go for a dental check-up unless they are in pain.
This is not true. Many dental problems progress very slowly - without any signs. Your dentist is trained to detect such problems. Early detection and timely treatment can correct or even prevent problems from occurring.

Doctors and dentists have known for a long time now that oral health and general health have a strong relationship.

A common example is if you have oral pain, this usually results in the body being deprived of the nutrition it needs, another is from people who get dry mouth often, this usually occurs from people on medication or have a disease and will result in tooth decay at quicker rate than most drug users, smokers and regular drinkers all put themselves at risk of having poor oral health.

Scientists now believe that oral health and general health are much closer related to other diseases than we might think, for example periodontal disease is now closer connected to stroke and bacteria disease.

Dental check-ups provide:
Advice and guidance
Early detection
Timely treatment
